Family Fitness Plans

FitSmart Family Fitness Plans are made for households that want to train together without forcing the same workout on everyone. We plan around mixed ages, different fitness levels and the realities of South African homes, from load-shedding to limited space.

What a family fitness plan includes

Each plan starts with a household fitness check so we can map out who is training, what each person can safely do, and what space you actually have at home. A good family plan is not just a shared calendar. It needs enough structure for adults, teens and older family members to follow, while still leaving room for school runs, shift work and busy weekends in Fourways, Sandton or further out in Midrand and Randburg.

We build the plan around home use equipment, bodyweight work and simple progress tracking. If your household already has a treadmill, bike, bench, resistance bands or a smart tracker, we work those in. If not, we will suggest a basic setup that suits the family size and the floor space available. For many homes, that means one compact cardio unit, one set of adjustable dumbbells, a mat, a few bands and a tracker for step and heart rate checks.

  • Household assessment and goal setting
  • Age-aware workout split for each person
  • Equipment pairing for shared use
  • Tracker setup help for progress monitoring
  • Weekly targets for training, recovery and activity

How we plan for different ages and abilities

Mixed-age training needs sensible boundaries. A parent doing strength work, a teenager building sports fitness and a grandparent focusing on mobility should not be doing the same session at the same load. We set each family member up with a safe starting point, then adjust the work rate, repetitions and rest times so nobody feels left behind.

For younger teens we keep the focus on movement quality, conditioning and consistency rather than heavy loading. For adults we can programme strength, cardio or weight loss goals. For older members we often add balance, joint support and low-impact cardio. The aim is to keep the whole household active in a way that works over time, not just for one motivated week.

  • Strength sessions: bodyweight, bands or light to moderate weights
  • Cardio sessions: walking, cycling, skipping or interval work
  • Mobility sessions: hips, shoulders, ankles and lower back
  • Recovery rules: rest days, hydration and sleep targets

Our process from first call to first week

The process is straightforward. We start with a short intake on the household, including ages, current activity, any injuries, available times and the equipment already in the home. Then we build the first version of the family plan and send through clear session notes. If you need help setting up trackers or arranging gear, our Fourways team can walk you through it step by step.

Family plans are prepared once we have all the details. Larger households or homes with special considerations, such as post-injury work or a very limited training area, may need more planning. If you are in Johannesburg or nearby areas like Pretoria East, Roodepoort or Randburg, we can also talk through delivery and setup timelines alongside the plan itself.

  1. Household intake and goal review
  2. Space and equipment check
  3. Plan design for each family member
  4. Tracker setup or equipment guidance
  5. First week check-in and fine-tuning

Pricing approach that suits real households

Family pricing is based on the number of people in the plan, the level of detail needed and whether you want equipment advice included. We keep it practical. A household that only needs a training schedule and tracker guidance will pay less than a family that wants full programme design, progress checks and help choosing equipment. There are no unnecessary extras bundled in.

We can structure the work as a once-off plan or as an ongoing coaching arrangement with monthly reviews. That helps if your children are in sport season, or if one adult is working on weight loss while another is focused on mobility and recovery. Payment is quoted in Rand before work starts so you know exactly what is covered.

  • Once-off household plan for a fixed starting point
  • Monthly support for families wanting regular updates
  • Optional add-ons for equipment selection and tracker pairing
  • Pricing adjusted by household size and coaching depth

Equipment and space specs for shared home training

Most South African homes do not have spare rooms lying around, so the plan needs to fit into real spaces. A family can train well in a garage, spare room, patio or a 2 m x 2 m clear area if the setup is organised properly. We work with equipment that suits apartments in Sandton as well as bigger family homes in Midrand, and we always take noise, floor protection and storage into account.

Typical shared-use specs include a mat area of at least 1.8 m x 0.8 m per person, a dumbbell set that can handle light and moderate loading, and trackers with step count, heart rate and sleep monitoring. In humid coastal conditions equipment needs wiping down after use, but even in Johannesburg dust builds up and moving parts need a quick check. If you train early morning or during load-shedding, we will suggest gear that still works without relying on mains power.

  • Minimum clear floor space: 2 m x 2 m for basic family circuits
  • Mat size: at least 1.8 m x 0.8 m per user
  • Recommended tracker features: steps, heart rate, sleep and activity reminders
  • Basic equipment set: bands, adjustable weights, mat and storage rack

Maintenance intervals and plan reviews

Shared plans work best when they are checked often enough to stay useful. We recommend a light review every 4 weeks and a deeper review every 8 to 12 weeks. That is usually enough time to see whether the sessions are getting easier, whether the family is using the equipment correctly and whether any person needs a quieter or more demanding progression. Small tweaks keep things moving without overcomplicating the routine.

Maintenance also covers the equipment side. We advise wiping down handles and trackers after use, checking resistance bands for wear every 2 weeks and inspecting moving parts monthly. If a treadmill, bike or bench is used by several people, it should be tightened and cleaned on schedule. That matters even more in homes near busy roads where dust can build up quickly.

  • Weekly: wipe down surfaces and log sessions
  • Every 2 weeks: inspect bands, straps and tracker charging
  • Monthly: review progress and adjust workloads
  • Every 8 to 12 weeks: refresh the full family programme

One plan for active Gauteng families

Many families want everyone moving more, but they do not want separate plans for every person. Family Fitness Plans bring that together in one practical system. Parents can train before work, teens can fit in short sessions after school and older members can keep active without feeling pressured into the wrong exercises. It saves time, reduces confusion and makes the home feel more active overall.

If you are in Fourways, Sandton, Midrand, Randburg, Roodepoort or Pretoria East, FitSmart can help you build a plan that suits your household and your equipment. The end result should be simple enough to follow on a busy week, but structured enough to deliver progress. That balance gives families a routine they can actually follow on a busy week.

Questions we get asked

Can one family plan work for different ages?

Yes. We separate the training load, exercise choice and rest times so each person gets a safe version of the same household plan.

Do we need equipment before starting?

No. We can plan around bodyweight work first, then add equipment suggestions once we know your space and goals.

How often should the family plan change?

We usually review the plan every 4 weeks and make bigger changes every 8 to 12 weeks, depending on progress and routine.
